March 2008
We have recently reviewed our policy on safe practice in Physical Education lessons, and following advice from Essex County Council, we will not be allowing any jewellery to be worn in PE lessons.
This will include the wearing of earrings, which will constitute a hazard if worn for physical activity. Earrings must either be removed by your child before the lesson or not worn to school on PE days. We will no longer allow earrings to be covered with micropore tape, due to the risk of injury. Children wearing earrings will not be allowed to participate in PE lessons for their own safety. Please check your child’s PE days displayed on the classroom window.
If for any reason earrings cannot be removed, please put your comment in writing to Mrs Eades, who may review an individual case in exceptional circumstances, for example an infection.
Unfortunately, due to Health and Safety regulations we cannot accommodate children having their ears pierced during term time as PE is a statutory and important part of the curriculum, and all children are expected to participate. We could therefore suggest that any piercings are done at the start of the summer holiday.
Please try to leave all jewellery at home as we cannot accept responsibility if it is brought into school.
Guidelines also indicate that long hair must be tied back. Therefore if your child has long hair, please could you ensure it is tied back on PE days.
I am sure that you will agree sagety is the priority for all of our children. Thank you for your co-operation.
